Varicose Vein Treatments
Varicose veins can be more than a cosmetic concern. They may cause aching, heaviness, swelling, cramping, itching, restless legs, skin changes, or discomfort that gets worse as the day goes on. Living Water Vein Institute & Medical Spa provides careful evaluation and minimally invasive treatment options for patients in Johnson City, Abingdon, Lebanon, Northeast Tennessee, and Southwest Virginia.
What to Know About Varicose Vein Care
Why Varicose Veins Happen
Varicose veins often develop when vein valves stop working properly. Instead of blood moving efficiently back toward the heart, blood can pool inside the vein. This can cause the vein to enlarge, twist, bulge, or become uncomfortable.
Some patients first notice visible veins. Others notice symptoms such as tired legs, swelling, heaviness, burning, itching, or night cramping. A proper diagnosis matters because the best treatment depends on the cause of the vein problem, not just how the vein looks.
Common Signs You May Need Vein Treatment
- Bulging or twisted veins that are visible through the skin
- Leg aching, heaviness, or fatigue, especially after standing
- Swelling around the ankles, calves, or lower legs
- Itching, burning, or tenderness near visible veins
- Restless legs or cramping, especially later in the day or at night
- Skin discoloration or texture changes around the lower leg or ankle
- Veins that keep returning after prior treatment
- Family history of varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency

How Varicose Vein Treatment Works
Your treatment plan begins with a consultation and, when appropriate, diagnostic ultrasound. The goal is to understand whether your varicose veins are connected to underlying venous reflux or another vein concern.
Consultation & Symptom Review
Your provider will listen to your concerns, review your symptoms, examine visible veins, and discuss how your legs feel during normal daily activity.
Vein Ultrasound When Needed
An ultrasound may be used to evaluate blood flow, vein valve function, and signs of venous reflux. This helps determine whether treatment is cosmetic, medically necessary, or both.
Personalized Treatment Options
Depending on your diagnosis, your plan may include EVLT, radiofrequency ablation, Varithena®, sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, compression therapy, or a staged combination approach.
Follow-Up & Long-Term Support
Your team will explain what to expect after treatment, when to return for follow-up, and how to support healthier circulation over time.
Minimally Invasive Options for Varicose Veins
EVLT & RFA
Energy-based treatments used to close certain diseased veins and redirect blood flow to healthier veins.
Varithena®
A microfoam treatment option used for certain varicose veins and venous reflux concerns when appropriate.
Sclerotherapy
An injection treatment sometimes used for select smaller varicose veins, reticular veins, and spider veins based on evaluation.
Phlebectomy
A minimally invasive procedure used to remove certain surface varicose veins through tiny openings in the skin.
Not every patient needs the same treatment. Some patients need one procedure, while others benefit from a staged plan that treats the underlying source first and then addresses remaining surface veins.
What to Expect After Treatment
Many modern vein treatments are performed in-office using minimally invasive techniques. Patients are often encouraged to walk soon after treatment, and many return to normal light activity quickly. Your provider will explain specific instructions based on your procedure.
You may be asked to wear compression stockings for a period of time. Mild bruising, tenderness, tightness, or swelling can occur and usually improves as healing progresses. Results vary, and your final outcome depends on your diagnosis, treatment plan, healing response, and follow-up care.
Aftercare may include:
- Walking after treatment as instructed
- Compression stockings when recommended
- Avoiding strenuous activity for a short period
- Follow-up ultrasound or provider check-in
- Additional treatment stages if needed

Varicose Vein Treatment FAQs
Are varicose veins a medical problem?
They can be. Some varicose veins are mainly cosmetic, but others are related to venous reflux or chronic venous insufficiency. Symptoms such as aching, swelling, heaviness, itching, cramping, or skin changes should be evaluated.
How are varicose veins diagnosed?
Your provider may recommend a venous ultrasound to evaluate blood flow and vein valve function. This helps identify whether an underlying circulation problem is contributing to your symptoms.
Is varicose vein treatment covered by insurance?
Many medically necessary treatments may be covered when symptoms and ultrasound findings meet insurance guidelines. Coverage varies, and our team can help review your benefits.
Does varicose vein treatment require downtime?
Many treatments are minimally invasive and performed in-office. Patients are often encouraged to walk after treatment and may return to normal light activity quickly, depending on the procedure.
Will treated varicose veins come back?
Treated veins are not expected to function the same way again, but new vein problems can develop over time. Follow-up care and ongoing circulation support may help manage long-term vein health.
