Sclerotherapy Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a commonly used treatment for spider veins, reticular veins, and select smaller varicose veins. At Living Water Vein Institute & Medical Spa, treatment begins with a careful evaluation so your provider can determine whether your visible veins are cosmetic, medical, or connected to a deeper circulation concern.
What to Know About Sclerotherapy
A Targeted Option for Small Visible Veins
Sclerotherapy works by placing a specialized solution into the targeted vein. The treated vein is designed to close and gradually fade as the body redirects blood flow through healthier veins.
This treatment is often used for spider veins and reticular veins on the legs. It may also be used for select smaller varicose veins depending on the vein size, location, symptoms, and ultrasound findings. The right treatment depends on the type of vein and the cause behind it.
Sclerotherapy May Be Considered For
- Spider veins on the legs, ankles, thighs, or calves
- Reticular veins, which are slightly larger blue-green surface veins
- Select smaller varicose veins when appropriate after evaluation
- Visible veins after pregnancy, aging, or prolonged standing
- Cosmetic vein concerns that affect comfort wearing shorts, dresses, or swimsuits
- Residual veins after larger vein disease has been treated
- Recurring small visible veins after previous treatment
- Combination vein concerns involving spider veins and varicose veins

Sclerotherapy vs. Other Vein Treatments
Sclerotherapy
Often used for spider veins, reticular veins, and select smaller visible veins near the surface.
EVLT & RFA
Energy-based treatments used for certain larger diseased veins and venous reflux concerns.
Phlebectomy
A minimally invasive option used to remove certain surface varicose veins through tiny skin openings.
Many patients benefit from a staged approach. Larger underlying vein problems may need to be treated first, followed by sclerotherapy for remaining smaller visible veins.
What to Expect After Sclerotherapy
After sclerotherapy, treated veins often fade gradually over time. It is normal for some veins to look darker before they improve. Mild bruising, redness, tenderness, itching, or small areas of firmness may occur as the treated veins heal.
Most patients can return to normal light activity quickly. Walking is often encouraged, while strenuous exercise, hot baths, or prolonged sun exposure may be limited for a short period based on your provider’s instructions. Results vary, and multiple treatment sessions may be recommended.
Aftercare may include:
- Walking after treatment as instructed
- Compression stockings when recommended
- Avoiding strenuous activity for a short period
- Protecting treated areas from sun exposure
- Returning for follow-up or additional sessions if needed

Sclerotherapy With Careful Vein Evaluation
Living Water Vein Institute & Medical Spa is led by Dr. John Berry and supported by a team focused on thoughtful vein diagnosis and personalized care. We do not treat every visible vein the same way. Instead, we evaluate the type of vein, your symptoms, and whether a deeper vein problem may be contributing.
Our goal is to help patients understand their options, feel comfortable with their treatment plan, and receive care that fits their health, comfort, and cosmetic goals.

Sclerotherapy FAQs
What does sclerotherapy treat?
Sclerotherapy is commonly used for spider veins, reticular veins, and select smaller varicose veins. Your provider will determine whether it is appropriate based on your vein type, symptoms, and evaluation.
Is sclerotherapy only cosmetic?
Sometimes it is cosmetic, but not always. If visible veins are paired with symptoms such as aching, swelling, heaviness, or cramping, a deeper vein evaluation may be recommended.
How many sessions will I need?
Many patients need more than one session. The number of sessions depends on the number of veins, the size of the area, the vein pattern, and how your veins respond.
How long does it take for veins to fade?
Treated veins usually fade gradually. Some veins may look darker before they improve. Your provider will explain the expected timeline for your specific treatment area.
Will I need compression stockings?
Compression may be recommended after leg vein sclerotherapy. Your provider will tell you whether compression is needed and how long to wear it.
Can new spider veins appear later?
Yes. Sclerotherapy treats targeted veins, but new spider veins or reticular veins can develop over time. Some patients choose maintenance treatments in the future.
